This past October, The Mighty Humble Blueberry was presented to members of NABC (the North American Blueberry Council) in Minneapolis, Minnesota at their fall meeting. NABC was established in 1965, and it represents nearly 70% of the North American cultivated blueberry crop. We are proud to report that the film was well received by its members, and we look forward to swapping more blueberry stories in the future. Before we left Minneapolis we could not resist picking up a few loaves of delicious homemade blueberry coffee cake at the Minneapolis Farmers Market - a blocks-long open-air farmers market in the heart of the city.
Beside their similar hues, cultivated blueberries and the majestic flowers known as irises are related for our purposes, by their respective Hybridizers (or the people who propagate new varieties of plants) - Miss Elizabeth Coleman White and Mrs. Barbara Walther.
Mrs. Walther was the curator of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Montclair, New Jersey. Following-up on some stories told to us by Miss White’s long-time assistant, June Vail, we were recently very fortunate to uncover some letters of correspondence between these two industrious women. While it is still uncertain what year and how they originally met, the two women shared many similarities in botany and work ethic. More to follow on this research in future posts……
